How To Felt Wool Instruction

Machine processing
Set up washing machine for heavy-duty cycle with hot water wash temperature, cold-water
rinse and maximum spin.
Put detergent (1/3 of a capful for a small load; 1/2 of a capful for a medium
load and 3/4 of a capful for a large load).
Put item to be felted in a zippered laundering bag and into the machine together
with any previously washed heavy fabric garment.
Check that there is enough space in the machine for the agitation, which is important
for felting.
Proceed with the full machine cycle. You may need to repeat this two or three times
before you achieve the texture you like.
When item is to your liking, shape and place on a towel and lay flat to dry or machine
dry.

Manual process
Protect your hands with rubber gloves.
Prepare two water containers, one very hot and one ice cold. Dissolve approx.
1/4 cup of detergent into container with hot water.
Place item to be felted into a container with hot water and start rubbing, squeezing
and agitating to cause as much friction on the fiber as possible for about 2 - 3
minutes.
Remove from hot water, squeeze out as much as possible and plunge immediately into
the iced water for 1–2 minutes, repeating the agitation.
Continue alternating hot/cold process until you achieve the texture you like. This
may take up to 5 or 6 repeats.
When item is to your liking, shape and place on a towel and lay flat to dry or machine
dry.
