CONTINENTAL KNITTING Lesson 1

Basic Definitions

  • Any knitted item is based on two stitches: knit stitch and purl stitch. All other stitches are just variations of these two.
      Knit Stitch   Purl Stitch
Knit stitch is formed at the front of the stitch bellow and it has a knot behind it Purl stitch is formed behind of the stitch bellow and it has a knot in front of it

  • Knit stitch is always opposite of a purl stitch and purl stitch is always opposite of a knit stitch. If stitch looks from one side of work as a knit stitch it will always look as a purl from the other side.

  • There are only two dirrections in knitting: working back and forth or in rounds. Keep in mind that circular needles are often used for both dirrections.

(Next 2 paragraphs are important to remember when correcting mistakes)
  • Yarn is always at the back of the work (behind the needle) when knitting. Because the yarn is at the back, the knot is behind the stitch.

  • yarn is always at the front of the work (at front of the needle) when purling. Because the yarn is at the front, the knot is at the front of the stitch.
