CONTINENTAL TECHNIQUE Lesson 8

Recognizing knit and purl stitches

Please, work these basic stitches to analyse knit and purl stitches. You should visually see which stitch is a knit stitch and which is a purl stitch.
When you see a knit stitch and you have to knit it or when you see a purl stitch and you have to purl it - it is called Work Stitches As Set. We work stitches as set to produce rib stitches, for example.
When you see a knit stitch and you have to purl it or when you see a purl stitch and you have to knit it - it is called Work Stitches In Reverse. We work stitches in reverse to produce Seed stitches, for example. 
The termin Work In Stitches In Pattern or also can be referred as Follow In Pattern means that you can work either stitches as set or stitches in reverse as defined in the pattern you are working on.

Follow these exercises and work stitches in pattern for each exercise:
Exercise 1 - Garter Stitch
Cast on 20 stitches and work back and forth. Work stitches in reverse 
Row 1: knit
Row 2: as row 1
Repeat from row 1 for 10 rows in total
Exercise 2 - Garter Stitch
Cast on 20 stitches and work in rounds. Work stitches in reverse
Row 1: knit
Row 2: purl 
Repeat from row 1 for 10 rows in total

Cast on 20 stitches and work back and forth. Work stitches as set 
 
Row 1: knit
Row 2: purl
Repeat from row 1 for 10 rows in total
Exercise 4 - Stockinet Stitch
Cast on 20 stitches and work in rounds. Work stitches as set 
Row 1: knit
Row 2: as row 1
Repeat from row 1 for 10 rows in total

Cast on 20 stitches and work back and forth. Work stitches in reverse 
Row 1: (knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch) repeat 4 times 
Row 2: (knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch) repeat 4 times  
Repeat from row 1 for 10 rows in total
Exercise 6 - Seed Stitch
Cast on 20 stitches and work in rounds. Work stitches in reverse 
Row 1: (knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch) repeat to end
Row 2: (purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch) repeat to end  
Repeat from row 1 for 10 rows in total
