CONTINENTAL TECHNIQUES Lesson 7

Working in rounds

  • We knit in circles or rounds to make seamless garments (also known as tube knitting).
  • There are two common ways:
using four, five or more double-pointed needles and using circular needles

Using double-pointed needles: You can use as many double-pointed needles as needed to rezemble a circle.

Four double-pointed needles (Used in North America for socks)
Five double-pointed needles (Used in Europe for socks)

    Using circular needles

Keep in mind that length of the needle determines what technique to use. For example, you can use Magic Loop with needle 150cm/59in long to make a tube 50cm.20in or you can use needle 60cm/23in long using full circle to make the same tube.

Magic Loop (2 loops)  It is another way of making socks instead of 4 double pointed needles and it is very common in North America. Only needles with flexible cord (ex. Addi) can be used. This technique is great for novice knitters. Number of stitches can be as small as 2 stitches only!

    one loop

This technique is used when number of stitches is too large to use for Magic Loop and yet not enough to switch to full cicrle.

    Full Circle

Traditional technique. Can be used with any type of circular needles as long as number of stitches is large enough to feel comfortable.
