CONTINENTAL PURLING Lesson 5

Purling first row: Insert the needle through the front

  • Bring the yarn to the front of work and insert the left index finger under the yarn.
  • Hold needle with stitches in your left hand in such a way that the very first stitch is located on the left index finger and the left thumb is holding the second stitch
  • You should be able to pull the needle easy enough without slipping stitches of the needle
  • See initial position
  • Insert the right needle into the very first stitch and slip it to the right hand needle without processing
  • You can push left hand needle down with your right index finger or you can pull the first stitch over the tip of the left hand needle with the right hand needle. Both ways are appropriate
  • Using your left thumb bring the yarn to the left of the second stitch
  • Insert the needle into the next stitch through the front of the loop. Notice how you hold the needle UNDER or OVER the yarn. It determines the slant of the new stitch! Release the yarn and draw it through this stitch forming a new stitch and slip this new stitch onto the right hand needle
  • Again bring the yarn to left of the next stitch with your left hand thumb
  • Repeat last 2 steps as many times as needed to purl more stitches

  • If you noticed, there are 2 different techniques are used:
  • 1 - You can use your left hand thumb to bring the yarn to the left side of the stitch (first 3 stitches in the clip)
  • 2 - You can use your right wrist to bring the stitch over the yarn (last 3 stitches in the clip)
  • Why not to switch hands to distribute the labor from one hand to the other?
