CONTINENTAL KNITTING Lesson 4

Knitting First Row: Inserting the needle through the front and over the yarn

  • Hold your work in the left hand. Bring the yarn to the back of the work. Insert left index finger under the yarn.
  • Extend the index finger just a little bit. Hold the work between the left thumb and middle fingers.
  • Hold the left needle firm but not tight.
  • See initial position
  • Insert the right needle into the first stitch and transfer it from the left needle to the right needle. It is called slipping off the first stitch.
  • You can push the left hand needle down with your right index finger or you can pull the first stitch over the tip of the left hand needle with the right needle.
  • Keeping the yarn over the left index finger and at the back of work, insert the right needle into the next stitch on the left needle through the front loop of the stitch. Extend left index finger away from the needle to eliminate looseness of the yarn.
  • Draw the yarn inside of this stitch forming a new loop and slip this loop onto the right needle.
  • Repeat last 2 steps as many times as needed to knit more stitches.

  • Inserting the needle under the yarn and through the back
