CONTINENTAL KNITTING Lesson 3

Slant of a Stitch

  • Slanting of the stitch is the direction of the new stitch placed on the needle. (Like a highway: goes to the right or goes to the left).Slanting of the stitch can be from right-to-left or from left-to-right.

  • Stitch positioned on the needle has two sides (also known as walls): back side and front side. Front side is what you see and back side is what behind the needle.
  • Sides of a stitch
Only one of these two sides can be closer (also called outermost) to the right hand needle. (it is a backside on this picture)
To check which side is the outermost, inset the right hand needle through the back side and then through the front side. When stitch becomes twisted?

  • As a rule of thumb, inserting the needle through the outermost side of the stitch is the way to knit or purl without twisting a stitch. Twisted stitch is also known as a "Granny Stitch" in European knitting and can be used in some patterns for a texture.

  • Two factors determine positioning also known as a slant of the new stitch: (1) is the needle UNDER or OVER the working yarn at the moment of the making the stitch; (2) type of the stitch – knit or purl.

  • To avoid twisting stitches, insert the needle through the outermost side of the stitch (either back or front).
To make a twisted stitch, insert the needle through the innermost side of the stitch (either back or front).
