CONTINENTAL KNITTING Lesson 2.1

Cast On Variant 2 (Popular in Europe and not known in North America)

  • Hold the loose end of the yarn in your left hand palm with left pinky, ring and middle fingers
  • Wrap the yarn from the ball over left thumb and index fingers and hold it with left pinky, ring and middle fingers as well, so that both ends of yarn are secured on the left palm
  • spread up left thumb and index fingers so that you have enough of yarn to start working with
  • Take a needle in your right hand and insert it under the yarn between left thumb and index fingers
  • Pull the yarn with the needle toward you and place right index finger onto pulled yarn to secure it from slipping
  • Move right hand with the needle toward the left thumb and scoop a needle into a loop that has been forming around thumb
  • Pull the yarn that is around left index finger into this loop
  • Take the thumb off the loop and pull the yarn toward you with the freed thumb to form your first 2 sts
  • Leave short end and hold long end from the ball with left pinky, ring and middle fingers
  • Wrap the yarn from the ball behind left index and then thumb fingers moving yarn with needles toward you
  • Move a needle under the yarn between left thumb and index fingers and then into the loop formed as you move right hand with needles
  • Pull needles with yarn away from you and move left thumb down at the same time and pull the yarn from left index finger into this loop
  • Take the left thumb off the loop and pull yarn down forming a stitch
  • Repeat last 4 steps
  • Here is what needed to know about Cast On Variant 2:

  • It is best used for ribs only
  • It is not recommended for beginners because stitches are not formed close to each other and it is not easy to process first row
